The Overview
Theory is a useful tool because it helps social work practitioners and others in the helping profession structure how we work with clients. Can you imagine what your life would be like if you went to the doctor for the chickenpox and the recommended cure was surgery because they “feel lucky” today? That’s what it can be like not using theory as your foundation.Even if you want to refute a theory you still have to have something to start with as your baseline. However, what is interesting is that theory is just as unique as the individual(s) that develop them.
The Discussion
Part I: Based on what you have read this week, identify one theory you understood best and one theory you understood least. For each theory, briefly discuss what you believe the theory says about development (you can look at this from a physical, emotional, or social perspective but you don’t have to analyze all 3 areas) and how you came to this conclusion.Be sure to include information from your text and 1 scholarly peer-reviewed source to substantiate your discussion here.
Part 2: The handout Frameworks in a Few Words (why did the chicken cross the road) is an excellent example of just how unique theory can be depending on the person creating it.Identify your top 3 quotes as to whether they were profound, made you laugh, or were just odd.Be sure to number and type them out so we know which one you are referring to.Then, for each quote you list briefly discuss 1 piece of information you know and/or learned about the speaker that you believe is the reason they answered the question the way they did.In other words, what are some pieces of knowledge about this person, their life, or their career that makes their response “make sense to you?”If you have to look some of them up to get some insight, that’s fine too.
