Take another look at what Barnes has been doing at the business school.

The case indicates that he was focused on “doing the same things

better” which is an indicator of the defender strategy. An analyzer

will have have one product in a stable market while at the same time

working to introduce a new product or expand into a new market. Barnes

was not introducing new products or markets but rather was looking to

bolster his traditional market/product. I agree that the strategic

planning committee was a good idea, but it does seem that while they did

a good job building a strategy to support they external changes they

were facing, they did not adequately assess how the internal environment

would react to change. What types of recruiting strategies do you

think would be effective here? Do you think that bi-weekly evaluations

might be quite time consuming? Were you thinking more along the lines

of informal manager-employee meetings? The faculty are very concerned

about the new evaluation criteria. How do you think these measures can

be integrated into the evaluation process?
